As with several other Colt designs, the 1851 Navy (along with several Southern made copies) served on both sides of the Civil War and soldiered on for many years afterward in the hands of such men as 'Wild Bill' Hickock and 'Buffalo Bill' Cody. With over a quarter of a million manufactured between 1850 and 1873, the 1851 Navy was one of the most popular, long-lived, and widely encountered "cap n' ball" revolvers in the wild west. When Wild Bill Hickok was murdered while playing Poker in Saloon #10 in Deadwood, SD, 1876 (while holding what has since become known as the "Dead Man's Hand" - aces and eights)
