The United States Army used the .44 Colt Ammo from 1871 to 1873 but replaced it when a better performing cartridge was introduced, the .45 Colt Ammo. The .44 Colt Ammo has similar dimensions to the .44 Special Ammo in terms of bullet diameter and case width; however, the exceptions can be seen in the shorter case length and smaller rim diameter. The first .44 Colt Ammo loading used a heeled to cover the outside of the lubricated bullet.
