Detailed Review

The Winchester Model 1866, also known as the "Yellow Boy" due to its distinctive brass frame, was a lever-action rifle designed by Benjamin Tyler Henry and manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company.

The Model 1866 first entered production in 1866 and was an immediate success among American settlers, cowboys, and army personnel. It was known for its reliability, accuracy, and ease of use, making it a favorite among shooters of all skill levels.

The rifle featured a tubular magazine that held 13 rounds of .44 caliber rimfire ammunition, which could be easily reloaded by pushing cartridges through the loading gate located on the right side of the receiver. The lever action mechanism allowed for rapid firing and quick chambering of new rounds, making it a popular choice among those who needed to defend themselves against dangerous animals, Native American attacks, or other threats.

Over the years, the Model 1866 underwent several design changes and improvements, including the addition of an improved loading gate and a stronger receiver. Additionally, some models were fitted with a brass cartridge elevator that allowed users to load cartridges directly into the magazine without having to push them through the loading gate.

The Model 1866 was used extensively throughout the American West during the late 19th century and was often the weapon of choice for famous figures such as Buffalo Bill Cody and Wild Bill Hickok. It was also used by the U.S. Army and saw action during the Indian Wars and the Spanish-American War.

Today, the Winchester Model 1866 is highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike. Its classic design and historical significance make it a valuable addition to any collection, and it remains a popular choice among those who participate in cowboy action shooting competitions.

If you are interested in owning a piece of American firearms history, the Winchester Model 1866 is a great choice. With its reliable performance, elegant design, and historical significance, it is a true icon of American rifle design.
