I am a .270 fan,but frankly Hickock, for the type of shooting you do (iron sights) the 30-06 is perfect in the M70. Interesting fact- the m70 rifle Carlos Hathcock used in his first tour in Vietnam was a USMC 30-06 rebarreled that came from the same 1940
