Marlin Firearms 1881

The Marlin Model 1881 was made from 1881 to 1892. Total of 16,375 of them were made in that time with round barrel, half round/half octagonal but mostly octagonal barrel. Most common barrel lengths were: 24 inches (2,788 rifles made), 26 inches (277 rifles made), 28 inches (12,482 rifles made) and 30 inches (780 rifles made). Existing serial numbers start at 4,000 in 1883 so it is assumed that first rifles with serial numbers from 0 to 4,000 are made in 1881 and 1882. Serial numbers and year of production: 1881 & 1882 (0 to 4000), 1883 (4,096 to 17,425), 1884 (4,206 to 9,554), 1885 (5,424 to 18,330), 1886 (4,918 to 15,981), 1887 (7,643 to 18,316), 1888 (7,292 to 22,063), 1889 (13,063 to 29,474), 1890 (14,651 to 45,221), 1891 (14,218 to 51,233). Before 1888, this rifle was known as marlin Repeating Rifle and than from 1888 it was named Model 1881. Double-set triggers were fitted in 16% of rifles. The Marlin Model 1881 was side-loading, top ejecting rifle. It was expensive at that time with original price of $32.
