Remember how your school lunch used to come with a little carton full of milk? And the extreme dissatisfaction you would feel if you accidentally opened that carton the wrong way? And the angry look on your fourth grade teacher’s face when she discovered that you filled her purse with dirt you smuggled in from the schoolyard? This is a true plinker’s cartridge, with a 38 grain lead round nose bullet. The simple projectile lacks any copper which could have jacked up its manufacturing cost, and its light weight and peppy propellant charge grant it a 1,235 fps muzzle velocity out of a rifle barrel. A 0.128 G1 ballistic coefficient keeps the bullet’s velocity supersonic until 35 yards and above 1,000 fps until 96 yards. At 100 yards the bullet retains 84 ft lbs of energy – plenty to kill a varmint with, even if the LRN cannot expand. 22 WMR - 25 Grain NTX - Winchester Varmint LF - 50 Rounds
This 22 WMR cartridge by Winchester is good for the planet, but not exactly nice to varmints like prairie dogs and woodchucks. That’s because it’s loaded with a 25 grain NTX projectile! The NTX is totally devoid of lead. If you’re headed out to do some shooting where toxic projectiles are banned, the NTX isn’t going to get you the wrong kind of attention. The NTX has an extremely concentric Advanced Manufacturing Process jacket and frangible copper alloy core, as well as a sharp polymer tip that markedly improves its ballistic coefficient. If the bullet collides with a varmint at the end of its flat trajectory, its tip will ram inward to build up great energy before connecting with the base of its nose cavity. You can imagine what happens next – KABLAMMO! Explosive fragmentation followed immediately by the demise of said varmint. “Quick and painless” doesn’t do the NTX’s terminal effect justice.
