What makes this cartridge optimal for self-defense is its 124 grain jacketed hollow point projectile. That jacket not only facilitates feeding in a semi-automatic firearm as well as penetration upon impact, but also features long notches running down its side. Upon impact, those notches start creating fault lines along which expansion can reliably occur. The wide wound channel that this bullet creates while tunneling within a soft target is perfect for stopping a violent interloper right in their tracks.
